Tasting Notes
Robert Parker – 87-89
"Perhaps the 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot just wasn’t showing well when I tasted it from barrel, but despite its attractive bouquet of lime, dried white flowers, toasted nuts and beeswax, it appears to lack some depth and intensity. Well-balanced and beautifully made, I suspect these 15-year-old vines simply struggled to recover from the challenges of the growing season."
JancisRobinson.com – 17.5
50% lost but the better parcels survived. Three x 350-litre barrels (one new). Barrel sample. Creamy and a touch of orange pith on the nose. Rich and quite open on the nose, then more spice and salinity/minerality on the palate. More volume in the mouth than in Les Ancegnieres, more power and drive but still pulls in to a long finish with just a gentle creaminess to the texture to clothe the arrow-like freshness. Has both intensity and elegance. Amazing length with beauty and freshness. (JH)
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030
Vinous – 90-92
(only 10% of the crop was lost to frost): Pale yellow. Chassagne-typical aromas and flavors of pear and flowers. Supple and dense, showing lovely spicy lift. Best today on the firm, rising, aromatic finish, which displays a dusty, positive bitterness and lingering notes of pear, crushed stone and minerals. This is 12.3% natural alcohol; Colin told me he only chaptalized in 2016 when the fruit came in below 12%.
